Introduction

This Adult Self Neglect Training Level 2 is tailored for professionals working in safeguarding to build confidence and competence in addressing self-neglect cases. Self-neglect can have severe consequences for individuals’ well-being, requiring a sensitive yet effective approach to intervention and support.

Through this training, participants will explore the causes, impacts, and complexities of self-neglect, gain a clear understanding of their legal duties under key legislation, and learn practical strategies to safeguard individuals using a person-centred approach. The session incorporates group discussions, case studies, and practical exercises to ensure participants can apply their learning directly in their day-to-day interventions.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

1. Understand Self-Neglect

• Define what self-neglect is and explore its causes and impacts on individuals.

2. Recognise the Signs and Indicators

• Identify physical, behavioural, and environmental signs of self-neglect.

• Gain confidence in distinguishing self-neglect from other safeguarding concerns.

3. Understand Key Legislation and Duties

• Learn about relevant legislation, statutory guidance, and safeguarding duties.

• Understand your role and responsibilities in addressing self-neglect.

• Use the Making Safeguarding Personal framework to empower individuals.

• Explore ways to engage individuals effectively while respecting their autonomy.

5. Identify and Report Concerns

• Understand processes for reporting self-neglect within your organisation.

• Learn how to collaborate with multi-agency partners to manage risks effectively.

6. Apply Learning to Practice

• Work through case studies and group exercises to reinforce learning.

• Develop practical strategies for assessing and intervening in self-neglect cases.
